A British pharmaceutical firm is to launch a drug that is the first to be sold in the United States to treat the common cold.

The deal comes as Pfizer is expected to lose most of its US rights in a potential $2 billion global health crisis.

The acquisition is the first time that a major American company is buying a leading pharmaceutical company, said Jim McElroy, the company's chief executive officer. "They are very sophisticated, very well-known brands. Pfizer is the first to sell to the public," he said.
